Dogs
The weekend seemed very long, though I went to the flee market on Sunday and bought a Mayan mask. I'll probably go back again in a few weeks and see about buying some statuary since apparently the vendor's there all the time. I'm probably actually going to be reading most of today, since I have some stuff to get critiquing and we'll be camping over Memorial Day weekend and I'll likely not have time to do any for four days. I've been doing some more thinking about my new One World story and it's finally starting to take shape (I cut off on Friday with two of my characters nearly coming to blows and I think my original imaginings of the roles are reversed). Hope to work on it some more today though.

Interestingly, I've been mentioned over the WotF forum as someone who's "been successful with stories based on folklore and mythology of Central or South America", which I find rather tickling but I really do have to wonder what I've done to deserve that distinction. Sure, I've published quite a few Aztec-based stories (no SA fiction, though I have written one and it's currently still in the revision stage), but I have only one semi-pro sale in the genre, the rest are all token (the Black Gate reprint would make it two semi-pro, if that pans out). Perhaps token markets are a little more influential than I tend to give them credit for? I'm skeptical, but who knows.... Anyway, being mentioned gave me a smile. And maybe some day I'll actually feel I qualify. :)

Cool deal on the mention. I've always said that you have a body of work that's specific in nature, so that stand out in people's minds, I think. :)

Thanks, Marshall!

Hey, that's cool!
I wouldn't question that, just add it to your pile of "good for the self-esteem, and good for getting noticed" stuff :)

Sorry for dragging your name into that, TL, but I was ready to pull my hair out at that point. I also think that Chris Roberson wrote something in that venue, but you were the one who came to mind in the middle of their quibbling.

Oh, I'm definitely not offended, so no need to apologize, and I'm glad you brought my name up. I was more surprised by the other person's reaction, that yeah I must be the person she was thinking of :). maybe someday. I was groaning and rolling my eyes at some of the things in that thread too (like the whole Apocalypto bit, going from being about Aztecs to Aztecs ambushing peaceful Maya...all I can say is that I certainly hope that that guy has done his research for his story better than when he posted that stuff. I actually don't have much a gripe about the "criticism" part of the thread, since I do believe that once stories are published they are free targets for criticism and deconstruction. I was more annoyed by Jordan's treating it all like the guy was dissing an unpublished story and that Aliette's skin isn't thick enough to take a little criticism. Besides, it's just one person's opinion and no one can please everyone. And the comment about there being no value in deconstructing published work!?! Well, I guess all my English lit classes were a complete waste of time, because that's basically what you do in those classes. :)

There are a lot of really touchy, easily-offended people on that forum. They need to learn to meditate...or something.

I was bemused to learn that we're in a writer's group together. I hadn't known that before then ;o) (I'm thinking he must mean Critters, because that's all Aliette and I have in common).

I was rather puzzled by that as well at first, though after a couple reads, I think the person was addressing you, to tell you that Aliette and I are in a group together (we're actually in two). I think there are too many easily-offended folks around in general at a good many of the forums I visit (which is often why I remain a lurker) and we'd all do well to take a chill pill and not take everything so personally and trying to assign negative motivations behind what people say (something I'd do well to heed myself on the homefront, since Jeff's convince I'm always reading something negative into what he says:-)).

Easy to do ;o) (the reading negative thing) That's why I'm often a lurker myself ;o)

That makes sense...about the writing group, I mean, because reading it the other way didn't....

I've mentioned you and Aliette before in that context (not this specific case), mostly because you're the only people I know who are publishing short fiction right now in that setting.

I have some things set in Brazil, but I'm still trying to sell them (after my recent near miss at ROF...)
