Progress

Paradox
I managed to make effective use of my 3 hours in the morning. I did a once over of "The Jade Bones" and sent it out to Realms of Fantasy. That's a big improvement for me in the progress department. I have today off, so I'm planning on doing a critique, updating the novel outline for NaNo, and maybe doing some work on another novel I've been working on off and on the last couple of months. Or maybe I'll try to finish up the first draft of the Egyptian fantasy story before that. I am only pages away from finishing it. After dropping Gaaron off at school, I"m going to make one last trip to the newstand and see if they've gotten in Interzone 212 (they did say they might still get it) and if they don't have it, I'm going to find somewhere on the internet to buy it from. As I understand it, Interzone's website doesn't sell individual issues.

Good luck with ROF!

Getting an individual issue of Interzone by mail is tricky if it's the current one...
You could always wait until November, and IZ 213 comes out--that way you could order 212 as a back issue :)

That's probably what I'll do, since the Newstand still didn't have it.

thanks! fyi, it's a post about why people only write within western based myths for fantasy. and why we don't write based on the aztecs, say. =)

I just left my thoughts there. I think I pretty much ended up agreeing with him on the most basic level, that more diverse cultures/myths aren't being represented in fantasy because not enough people feel passionate enough to do the necessary research to rise above cliche and utter fakeness. Editors don't want stories that feel fake, and if most of the stuff that's coming in that feels real to them is medieval, European-style fantasy, then of course that's what they're going to buy. I don't think a really fantastically done non-western fantasy is going to be passed up by either editors or readers. I just think editors are just unwilling to settle for a status quo over quality (though maybe my opinion of that will change once I finish my novel and start trying to shop it.).

i agree with you. i think it works if you have a passion for what you are writing, no matter if the culture is your own. the passion does need to be there.
